The public private partnership between the Ministry of Health of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Overseas Infrastructure Alliance (OIA) has borne fruit in the form of OIA India Eye Care Centre in the metropolis.
Ethiopia, the ancient ancestral land of human kind and civilization, a political and diplomatic hub for Africa, deserves to have a world class eye care facility such as OIA.
OIA feels honored that H.E. Dr. Mulatu Teshome, the President of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and other higher government officials grace the inauguration ceremony of the Eye Care Centre and is grateful for the support provided by the Zewditu Memorial Hospital, Addis Ababa Regional Health Bureau and the Mayor office of Addis Ababa. The OIA Africa Health and Welfare Endowment has a belief that the Eye Care Centre will be a shining example of a successful public-private partnership between the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia and OIA.
With a 15 bed dedicated state of the art and ultra-modern Ophthalmology facility based in the campus of Zewditu Memorial Hospital in Addis Ababa, OIA Eye Care Centre will offer relief to patients suffering from conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetes related eye problems and plastic surgery around the eyes. The facility also has an in-house training centre for surgeons, paramedic and administrative staff to build the local human resources and has been built in technical collaboration with an Indian centre of excellence which provides medical advisory and consultancy services.
Dr. Rashmin Gandhi, the lead ophthalmologist monitoring the OIA India's Eye Care Centre says, "We have a vision to steadily increase the capacity in phases to treat 100,000 patients and perform 10,000 sight restoring surgeries at the Centre in about three years and also plan to introduce Mobile Eye Care Clinics in the remote areas."
"OIA India Eye Care Centre will provide world-class eye care facilities to meet our commitment towards corporate social responsibility on a non-profit basis and we believe that the Eye Care Centre will be the pride of Addis Ababa and Ethiopia. The Centre offers holistic and quality health services. We will develop local human resource capacity through training in healthcare by following a service model which is innovative and self-sustainable," says, Mr. Advait Chaturvedi, E.D. Operations, OIA.
The Minister of Health, Dr. Kesetebirhan Admasu, has stressed that the eye center should provide care for poor people at subsidized rate. He has also stressed that the center will be used to train Ethiopian doctors and other professionals.
The excellent healthcare facilities of the Centre are being welcomed by the people of Ethiopia and will be seen a concrete symbol of the government's commitment to its people. This effort will strengthen the deep and strong relationship between the two countries of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Republic of India.
